Urachal Anomalies in Children: Our Experience
نویسنده
چکیده
The urachus is a tubular structure in intrauterine life and the failure of obliteration of its lumen can lead to various anomalies in post natal life namely; patent urachus, urachal sinus, urachal cyst or urachal diverticulim. These urachal anomalies may have symptomatic presentation such as watery umbilical discharge, swelling in the umbilical area or remain asymptomatic to be detected incidently on imaging for other urinary symptoms. The mainstay of diagnosis of rests on history and physical examination and ultrasonography. C T Scan or voiding cystourethrography are rarely needed for reaching a diagnosis of urachal anomalies. These anomalies once detected should always be excised surgically for the fear of malignant potential of the transitional epithelium which they contain.

Urachal Anomalies in Children: A Single Center Experience
The objective of this study is to define optimal diagnosis and treatment strategies for patients with urachal anomalies in the pediatric age group. The medical records of 21 children who had undergone surgery for urachal anomalies at Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine from January 1990 to April 2005 were reviewed. The subjects included 14 males and 7 females (M:F 2:1). Th...

BACKGROUND The embryological and anatomical features of urachal anomalies have been well defined. Because of the variable clinical presentations, uniform guidelines for evaluation and treatment are lacking. In an attempt to establish an optimal diagnostic and treatment modality, we report our experience with urachal anomalies at a single institution over a 10-year period. METHODS The records ...
متن کاملA comprehensive review of pediatric urachal anomalies and predictive analysis for adult urachal adenocarcinoma.
PURPOSE We examined the presentation, diagnosis and management of radiologically detected pediatric urachal anomalies and assessed the risk of malignant degeneration. MATERIALS AND METHODS Our radiology database (2000 to 2012) was queried for all children younger than 18 years who were diagnosed with a urachal anomaly radiographically, and the operative database was used to determine those wh...
متن کاملClinical considerations, management and treatment of fever of unknown origin caused by urachal cyst: a case report
INTRODUCTION Urachal cysts are rare congenital anomalies that often prompt referral to the paediatric general surgeon because of their associated complications such as infection, abdominal pain and the young age at presentation. In this report we describe a rare case of fever of unknown origin caused by an urachal cyst which was successfully treated with incision and drainage only. Since the fi...
متن کاملRobotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery of urachal anomalies: a single-center experience.
OBJECTIVES Urachal anomalies typically arise from abnormalities in the process of urachal closure. Urachal pathology causes morbidity (pain, umbilical drainage) and may harbor malignancy. Robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery may be an attractive alternative to the open approach, which has only been studied in rare case reports. Herein, we report our experience with robotic surgery for benign u...
